here are my lil two cents. moise made a comment one day that i found insightful. a lot of people, this writer included, are up in arms over "the very definition of marriage being at stake." true, to some degree. moise believes that gay marriage doesn't threaten the sanctity of heterosexual marriage like the outrageous divorce rate. to me, how can marriage be viewed as sacred when so many people give up on it? just a thought.
also, call me a liberal, but i don't see gay marriage as that big of a deal. please, don't stone me. :) i don't agree with it, but i think other issues are sooooo much more important, such as the economy, our relationships with other countries, poverty in this country, the war in iraq, etc.
Jessica, this is a stone free zone and I don't consider "liberal" a pejorative. Two points:
I agree that Christians who are up in arms about "gay marriage" but not about the outrageous divorce rate (even in the church) are a bit hypocritical and un-Biblical. The Bible is clear about what God thinks about divorce (He hates it). Jesus's teachings on divorce were far more restrictive than most of us like to think.
BUT, I still think giving "same-sex marriage" a civil sanction would be a big deal, and a candidate's position on that is a big deal too. No, it wouldn't change what marriage really is -- God's definition stands no matter what the law says -- but it would be an unprecedented step with lots of consequences for society.
As always, thanks for the interaction!
Since I can't leave a comment under your Valentine blog I will leave it here - I thought that was the sweetest blog about your wife, very meaningful and sincere. I'm sure it made her day!
